When the hostages were taken in the US Embassy, I was in a Military Police company at ROB in Kaiserslautern, West Germany. President Carter ordered us and a Marine Corp company to prepare to rescue them. Our last will and testament was taken by JAG, our dog tags removed, our jeeps mounted with 50 cal, and we were ready to drive the 5 km distance to Ramstein Air Base onto the aircraft. The op plan was to land at Tehran, for the MPs to secure the area of the airport and our aircraft while the Marines rescued the hostages at the Embassy, return to the airport and fly them out while we remained as rear guard, and then board and fly out too. At the last minute, the President called it off. What a mistake! The hostages were still held at the Embassy, one location. His decision to later do a more ‘planned’ (and political) operation was….well, as you said, not successful. Although dangerous, I felt we should have gone for sure.

That would be crazy like a fox if you publicize that you’re going to do that and use it as a diversion to hammer every IRGC troop that showed up. 😂😂

  1. “Operation Eagle Claw”, . what a Mess, Bad info. bad logistics, seems the only road, middle of the night, No one ever drives on that stretch of the Road at that time, Really, We had Planes, trains and automobiles on that Road, at That time. seems the only ones NOT there were the hostages.
