The only reason I wouldn’t like Senator Cruz is because he might leave Texas open for a dummycrat take over when he leaves his senate seat.
No, the governor would appoint a successor to fill his seat till the term expires. No way Abbott would appoint anyone than deep Red conservative to this post. Could get himself appointed if he so choses
